Experts in face and neck lifts

The facelift and neck lift is an operation that, although often placed under the same heading, affects different facial compartments. It consists of four different stages of treatment: upper facelift, mid facelift, lower facelift and neck lift. As with all facelifts, the aim of the procedure is to rejuvenate the appearance of the face and to give the tissues sufficient tension to return them to a previous state. In this sense, it is very important to understand that a facelift is not intended to tighten the skin, which is a common mistake and causes poor results. The facelift aims to restore all the structures that have fallen over the years due to the effect of gravity and the loss of elasticity of the tissues to their original state. To do this we must detach the skin from the face and work the internal compartments to lift the fat that has fallen towards areas such as the lower edge of the jaw and reposition it in the correct place.

The passage of time, gravity and the loss of elasticity of the tissues lead them to fall in a cranial-caudal direction, i.e. in the direction of gravity. A facelift that stretches the face laterally will pull these tissues laterally and this will result in what we call a “bat-like face”, a very unsatisfactory aesthetic result.

To avoid this it is important to reposition these adipose tissues from the bottom upwards once we have lifted the skin and not laterally. Once the tissues have been repositioned into place inside the skin, the excess skin will be trimmed without tension, as we understand that this is only a cover for what is going on in the deep compartments.

To rejuvenate the forehead, we use a forehead or coronal lift, which not only lifts the forehead but also the eyebrows and repositions them in their place.

In the case of a neck lift, the entire neck must be treated in order to restore a youthful appearance to the neck in the same way.

Dr. Jesús Lago explains the facelift and cervical lift

Of course we can. Unnatural results are due to incorrect techniques that do not reposition the tissues in the deep compartment, but simply pull the facial skin laterally. These results should always be avoided, and therefore we must apply the correct surgical technique that repositions the fat from bottom to top in the deep positions, thus avoiding artificial faces and rejuvenating the facial expression in a natural way.

The cervical facelift is an operation performed on the face, which is a very visible area. Inflammation occurs during the first few weeks, so we recommend staying at home for at least two weeks for a good recovery. After this period, the swelling has gone down considerably and socialising can be resumed.

The most important risk of this surgery is the injury of deep structures. This is why it is very important to have good training and experience that allows us to avoid entering structures that could produce long-term aesthetic defects that are sometimes irreparable. One of these risks is injury to the facial nerve. It is essential to choose a centre where the experience and training of the surgeons guarantees the least number of complications.

For a facelift it is always advisable to go to centres that have hospitalisation and special units. Although a facelift is not a risky procedure, the patient must remain hospitalised for at least 24/48 hours, which is why we always recommend a hospital centre.

The coronal facelift allows us to lift the eyebrows and reposition them to their previous position, i.e. in women a little above the orbital rim and in men just above the orbital rim, as well as giving a taut appearance to the forehead. In the mid and cervical facelift, the main focus is on the face and neck.
