Hymenal reconstruction or hymenoplasty is a surgical technique that aims to reconstruct the hymen that is intact in infancy and that breaks with the first sexual intercourse or with the use of tampons to control menstruation.
The technique consists of recovering the membranes that are torn from the hymen and stitching them back together in a simple surgical procedure that allows us to restore the vulva to its virginal appearance.
Sometimes we do not find hymenal remains and in this case we will have to make small flaps with the vaginal mucosa to reconstruct the hymen and make the vulva look pre-pubertal again.
The operation is simple, is performed under local anaesthesia on an outpatient basis and requires vulvar rest for the first few weeks until complete healing, so we recommend waiting about a month to be able to have sexual intercourse for the first time.
