Rescue Surgeries

We frequently receive in our practice patients who have undergone surgery in other centres and who have suffered complications or who, without having suffered complications, have a bad result from the operations. These bad results or complications increase enormously when the surgical technique is not correct or when surgeries are performed in less time than necessary to complete all the steps.

In either case there is an increase in the proportion of complications and a poor aesthetic result. In order to perform salvage surgery, which is what we call the surgical correction of these sequelae of previous surgeries, a correct evaluation is necessary. In some cases, as in the case of the breast, all the reports of previous surgeries must be provided where we can see what type of intervention was performed, which pedicles were used and how the vascularisation was compromised at the time.

It may happen that the patient does not have these reports to provide, in which case it will be necessary to carry out some tests to determine what type of intervention has been performed, even so, it is often not possible to reach a clear conclusion about the type of intervention performed, especially if it is the breast. That is why it is so important to perform a good initial surgical technique to avoid not only complications but also to make secondary surgeries to correct the sequelae of previous complications or poor results less complex.

Surgery requires great training, great specialisation, great experience and continuous updating in order to obtain good results and reduce the proportion of complications. We will never cease to insist that a well-trained and well-prepared surgeon with great experience has a low complication rate and that a surgeon who uses the correct time to carry out his interventions will also have a low complication rate.

That is why it is very important when we decide to put our body in the hands of a surgeon, to select a centre and professionals who offer these guarantees. Once we receive a patient who presents a sequel of a previous surgery, we must advise them with all the evidence and information we have about the previous intervention, about what we can do to improve those results, be realistic in our expectations and explain to the patient the possible complications that may arise from a bad technique performed previously.
