What is an adjustable gastric band?

The adjustable gastric band is a minimally invasive bariatric surgery technique designed to help you lose weight gradually and sustainably. It involves placing a silicone band around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small gastric reservoir that limits the amount of food you can eat, making you feel full with less food.

Unlike other procedures such as gastric bypass or gastric sleeve, the gastric band does not require any cuts in the stomach or intestine, and is adjustable and reversible.

Instructions for gastric band placement

The gastric band is indicated for patients with:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 30, especially if they have comorbidities (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, etc.).
  • Morbid obesity (BMI >40).
  • Failure of other treatments such as diets, medications, or endoscopic procedures (intragastric balloon, POSE method).
  • Desire for a less invasive and reversible technique.

Dr. Jesús Lago explains gastric band surgery

How is the gastric band fitted?

The band is placed around the stomach using laparoscopic surgery. No organs are cut and the digestive system is not altered. The system includes a subcutaneous port through which the diameter of the band can be adjusted with saline solution.

How much weight can you lose with a gastric band?

On average, patients can lose between 40% and 60% of excess weight during the first 18 to 24 months, depending on their commitment to dietary and lifestyle changes.

Is the gastric band permanent?

Not necessarily. It can be continued indefinitely if it is effective and well tolerated. However, it can be discontinued if necessary, as it does not permanently alter the digestive system.

What kind of diet should I follow after surgery?

During the first few weeks, a liquid diet is followed, then a semi-solid diet. Subsequently, progress is made towards a balanced diet. Nutritional monitoring is key to achieving good results and avoiding deficiencies.

What are the risks of gastric banding?

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks such as infection, slippage, or erosion of the band. However, the complication rate is low when performed in specialized centers with adequate follow-up.

Who cannot have a gastric band fitted?

Not recommended for people with uncontrolled eating disorders, severe gastrointestinal diseases, pregnancy, or lack of commitment to medical and nutritional follow-up.
