Eyelid surgery aims to remove excess skin and fat that adds years to the expression of the eyes. In some cases this excess skin can even cause vision difficulties as it falls above the eyelashes. It is very important to carry out a prior evaluation of all the structures that make up or affect the eyelid. We often receive patients who have undergone eyelid surgery but have not achieved a satisfactory result because the situation of the forehead and eyebrows was not correctly assessed. Over the years it is common for the eyebrow to droop due to laxity of the forehead tissues. This will negatively affect the eyelid as it will add skin in the peri-orbital area when in reality this skin does not form part of the eyelid but of the drooping of the eyebrow towards the orbit.
For this reason it is essential to advise the patient correctly, as on some occasions we will not only have to intervene on the eyelids but also recommend a coronal lift at the same time, which can reposition the eyebrow in its optimal position to restore a clean and clear expression to the gaze.
The blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis and under local anaesthesia. It is a simple procedure lasting about three hours in which, in addition to removing the excess skin, we will also remove the excess fat that has moved from its normal periorbital position to the area underneath the skin. The stitches will be camouflaged in the folds and the inflammation and small bruises that may form in the postoperative period can be camouflaged under a pair of sunglasses so that the patient can return to normal daily activities or work very quickly.

The results are very good as the gaze is always directed towards the eyes, it is a focal point of our expression and a point that everyone notices. For this reason, when the passage of time is reflected in the eyelid, this surgery, which is performed on an outpatient basis, provides a very good result. On the other hand, if it is necessary to combine it with a coronal lift to raise the eyebrow, the result is even better as this procedure can also be performed on an outpatient basis and under local anaesthesia.
The complications that can occur in blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery are usually associated with the surgeon’s lack of experience. The most frequent complications are related to excessive tension on the sutures that can cause ectropion (everted eyelid) which requires a new operation to correct it. Any surgeon with sufficient training and experience will be able to correct these defects with small and simple gestures.
Generally within a few days, no more than a week, the patient will be able to return to their daily activities. The bruising and swelling after the operation does not last much longer and can be camouflaged with sunglasses.
The stitches are normally removed five days after surgery, it is one of the operations in which the stitches are removed the earliest.
