Two Ways to Feminize Your Voice
The two approaches don't give the same result. Surgery through the neck needs only a small incision, you go home the same day, and we can reduce your Adam's apple during the same operation. But the result is limited, clearly not as good as surgery through the mouth, and your voice may lose some of its feminization over time. Surgery through the mouth leaves no scar, and the result is better and permanent, although you stay in the hospital for up to 24 hours. The neck approach costs less, but Dr. Jesús Lago advises you to choose based on the result you want, not on price.
Through a small incision in a crease of the neck, we bring two of the cartilages of the larynx, the cricoid and the thyroid, closer together. This tightens the vocal cords and raises the pitch of your voice. The scar fades but never disappears completely. The result is limited, not as good as a Wendler glottoplasty, and your voice may lose some of its feminization over time.

We operate through the mouth, with no incision in the neck, and shorten the vocal cords themselves with stitches. Shorter and tighter, they vibrate faster, and the pitch of your voice rises permanently. For the first few weeks, swelling makes your voice sound deeper. This is normal. You'll need complete voice rest for the first few days, then you can gradually start using your voice again. Afterward, you'll need to work on your voice with a speech therapist, which is not included in the price.

Our Complication Rates
We carry out four voice feminization procedures a year, across both techniques. We regularly update our complication rates for each procedure and specialty, and publish them on a dedicated page.

We assess every request on its own merits: the need, the expected benefit weighed against the risks, your health, and how well you understand what cannot be reversed.

The price of voice feminization includes your preoperative assessment, the operation, the anesthetic, full medical care and aftercare. The neck (anterior) approach also includes a medical report for your speech therapist, and the Wendler glottoplasty includes a camera check of your vocal cords. Speech therapy is not included.
It's for trans women whose voice is still deep, and for anyone, including cis women, who would like a higher pitch and a softer tone.
Surgery through the neck leaves a small scar in a natural crease of the neck. It fades over time but doesn't disappear. A Wendler glottoplasty is done through the mouth and leaves no scar.
No. After surgery through the neck, your voice may lose some of its feminization over time. A Wendler glottoplasty shortens the vocal cords themselves, so the result is permanent.
Yes. After a Wendler glottoplasty, speech therapy is essential, and Dr. Jesús Lago recommends it after neck surgery too. Your therapist helps you make your new voice your own and avoid straining it. Therapy sessions are not included in the price.
Allow five to seven days of voice rest after neck surgery, and seven to ten days of complete voice rest after a Wendler glottoplasty. You then start using your voice again gradually.
After several weeks. You can judge the final result once healing is complete and your voice has adapted. With either technique, your voice changes from the day of surgery.
Yes, through the same incision. Dr. Jesús Lago has combined the two procedures several times through the neck. There's no particular order or waiting time to respect between them. However, they can't be combined when the Adam's apple is reduced through the mouth.
See Adam's apple reductionYes, temporarily. After neck surgery, you may notice hoarseness or a voice that breaks during the first few weeks. After a Wendler glottoplasty, swelling often makes your voice deeper at first. This is normal.
