Will my voice be affected?

We protect your voice by limiting how much we remove. The vocal cords sit just behind the Adam's apple cartilage, and we reduce the cartilage without reaching them.

Will there be a scar?

It depends on the approach. Surgery through the neck leaves a small scar hidden under the jaw. Surgery through the mouth leaves none.

When will I see the result?

Straight away. You can see the result of an Adam's apple reduction as soon as the operation is over.

Can I have Adam's apple reduction and voice feminization in the same operation?

Yes, through the same incision. Dr. Jesús Lago has combined the two procedures several times through the neck. If you'd rather have them separately, you're free to choose the order and timing. Through the mouth, however, the two can't be combined.

Is Adam's apple reduction also for trans men?

Rarely. Adam's apple reduction is mainly for trans women. Trans men usually want the opposite, in which case Adam's apple augmentation is the right procedure.

Adam's apple reduction, also known as a tracheal shave, reduces the cartilage that sticks out at the front of the neck and refines its contour, for a more feminine neck. Dr. Jesús Lago carries out two Adam's apple reductions a week at Clínica 3 de Mayo in Madrid, where he also welcomes patients from the UK, Ireland and beyond.

Two Ways to Reduce the Adam's Apple

The vocal cords sit just behind this cartilage, so we reduce it carefully and never too much, to protect your voice and breathing. Through the neck, under local anesthesia, you go home the same day with a small scar under the jaw. Through the mouth, your neck is left untouched, but you need a general anesthetic and one night in the hospital.

We make the incision in a natural crease under the jaw, so the scar becomes almost invisible. We can also feminize your voice through the same incision, during the same operation. Recovery takes about five days.
