How Vaginoplasty Works
All four techniques create a vulva. What differs is the tissue used to line the vagina: penile skin, peritoneum (the membrane lining the abdomen), a segment of colon, or no vaginal canal at all. We decide together, based on the depth you want, your sex life and the level of risk you are prepared to accept.
We form the vaginal lining from the skin of the penis and scrotum, turned inwards. The crown of the glans, with its nerves and blood vessels, becomes the clitoris, so it keeps its sensation. We shorten the urethra so that urine comes out in the usual female position. The price includes a dilator kit.

We line the vagina with a flap of peritoneum, the membrane covering the inside of the abdomen, laparoscopically. This tissue gives good depth, produces little discharge, causes no unpleasant odor and allows normal intercourse. The new vagina stays stable over time, with no need for daily dilation in the long term. The price includes a dilator kit.

We form the vaginal lining from a segment of colon, which is taken and positioned laparoscopically. This technique gives more depth, but the operation is more delicate and the risk is higher, so we reserve it for patients who want that depth and accept that risk.

We create a complete vulva, with outer and inner labia, clitoris and urinary opening (the meatus), but no vaginal canal: zero-depth vaginoplasty stops at the external vulva. This means you will not be able to have vaginal intercourse, but you will not need to dilate. The operation is simpler and recovery is shorter.

The price of a vaginoplasty includes your preoperative assessment, the evaluation consultation, the procedure and hospital stay, follow-up appointments and laboratory analysis of the removed tissue. It also includes a dilator kit, except for the zero-depth technique.
No. You can keep taking estrogen before a vaginoplasty.
Three days after penile inversion or zero-depth vaginoplasty (no vaginal canal), including the day of surgery, and four days after a laparoscopic technique (peritoneal or colovaginoplasty).
Dilators keep the depth and width of the new vagina while it heals, as healing tends to narrow it. The price includes the kit for every technique that creates a vaginal canal. Zero-depth vaginoplasty, or vulvoplasty, creates a vulva with no canal, so you have no dilation to do.
After a colovaginoplasty, we check how the vagina and colon are healing with a flexible endoscope passed through the rectum (rectosigmoidoscopy), under light sedation. We do this if healing is slow, or if we suspect a connection between the vagina and the digestive tract.
Yes, you can have an orchiectomy first, as long as it is not combined with a scrotoplasty. Scrotoplasty uses up the tissue needed for the labia. If you are considering a vaginoplasty, even later on, we check this with you before any orchiectomy.
