Biliopancreatic Diversion
Biliopancreatic diversion is a type of weight loss surgery. It makes your stomach smaller, so you eat less, and routes food past a large part of your intestine, so your body absorbs less of it. Dr. Jesús Lago operates at Clínica 3 de Mayo in Madrid, for patients from the UK, Ireland and beyond.

How Biliopancreatic Diversion Works
In both techniques, bile and pancreatic juice, which your body needs to digest food, only mix with food at the far end of the intestine, so you absorb much less. The biliopancreatic bypass keeps a small stomach that food passes through easily. The duodenal switch removes 80% of the stomach, which also limits how much you can eat.
We leave a stomach of 200 to 250 ml, larger than in a gastric bypass, connected to the intestine by a wide opening. It limits portions without slowing food down: the effect comes mainly from diverting the intestine. Because your body absorbs much less, we monitor you very closely after the operation. In some cases, the operation later has to be partly or fully reversed: Dr. Jesús Lago will explain why at your consultation.

We reduce the stomach by about 80% by shaping it into a tube (a gastric sleeve), then perform the same intestinal diversion, so food is absorbed over only about 40% of the intestine's length. We see you every month for the first six months, then once a year. You return to eating in stages: liquids, then puréed food, then soft food, then normal food in smaller portions. Avoid carbonated drinks and chew slowly.

The price of a biliopancreatic diversion covers your preoperative assessment, evaluation consultation, surgery, hospital stay and follow-up appointments. It also includes two years of nutritional follow-up, weight loss surgery aftercare with two appointments with a psychologist, and a 24-hour emergency line for two years. If needed, it also covers an endoscopy, a blood test and an ultrasound.
SADI-S also diverts the intestine, with a single connection, and keeps the pylorus (the valve that holds food in the stomach). In a biliopancreatic diversion, bile and pancreatic juice only mix with food right at the end of the intestine.
